The Nintendo GameCube is a home video game console that was created and launched by Nintendo on September 14, 2001 in Japan, November 18, 2001 in North America, and February 2, 2002 in PAL countries.
It is the Wii's predecessor and the successor of the Nintendo 64, which was introduced in 1996. The GameCube, Nintendo's debut into the sixth generation of video game systems, went up against Microsoft's first Xbox and Sony's PlayStation 2.
Its first stages of development started in 1997 with the founding of ArtX, a computer graphics startup that was eventually bought by ATI and would later go on to build the GPUs for the platform.
In a May 1999 press conference, Nintendo revealed the console, then known as "Project Dolphin." The GameCube was the first Nintendo system to use optical discs as its primary storage media when it was released in 2001. More precisely, a miniDVD-based format.
The system is not compatible with DVDs, CDs, or other optical media because it is only designed for gaming, in contrast to its rivals.
The system can be linked to a Game Boy Advance with a link connection, enabling users to access special in-game capabilities utilising the handheld as a second screen and controller.
Limited online gameplay is supported for a select few titles using a GameCube broadband or modem adapter. A few titles for the GameCube allow you to access unique features with e-Reader cards. Because optical discs are read-only, saved game data can only be kept on memory cards.
Cartridge games for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance may be played using the Game Boy Player add-on.
The GameCube received a split response. It received accolades for its controller, sizable software library, and top-notch games but also flak for its outward appearance and dearth of multimedia features. Nintendo discontinued the GameCube in 2007 after just 21.74 million units were shipped globally.
The Wii, its replacement, debuted in November 2006 and offers complete backward compatibility with GameCube controllers, storage, and games.
